CHMF  BTEC Certificate in Horse Management
<head>

A nationally recognised qualification broadly equivalent to one GCE AS Level.  It is awarded by Edexcel, an international awarding body. It is ideal for those who wish to gain a recognised vocational programme as part of their continued professional development or who want to work within the equine industry.

The certificate in comprised of three units, each with two written course assignments;

CHM Unit 1: Principles of Horse Behaviour and Welfare (10 credits)

CHM Unit 2: Principles of Horse Rehabilitation and Therapy (10 credits)

CHM Unit 3: Principles of Animal Nutrition (10 credits)

The course duration is 6 months (2 months per unit)  and requires approximately 180 hours of study and assignment work. You will need to be able to commit to approx 30hrs of study and the production and submission of one written assignment each month.

This course can be paid for in 5 equal monthly instalments

CHM1  BTEC UNIT 1: PRINCIPLES OF HORSE BEHAVIOUR AND WELFARE

This BTEC Level 3 unit covers the evolution of the horse, and how it was originally domesticated. It covers equine communication, social structures and behaviour both of the wild horse and behaviour exhibited in the domesticated situation.  Abnormal behaviour patterns, signs and causes of stress in the horse are discussed, along with  methods to minimise stress and behavioural problems. Current welfare legislation is also discussed. This unit is assessed through two course assignments.

This unit can be studied alone to achieve a BTEC Certificate of Achievement or as part of the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Horse Management.

CHM2  BTEC UNIT 2: PRINCIPLES OF HORSE REHABILITATION & THERAPY

This unit covers common sites and types of performance injuries, their cause and effect and how they relate to different disciplines, to provide a foundation to understanding their diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.   Associated diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and their uses and effects are discussed, along with a wide range of rehabilitation techniques used to improve performance. The laws and regulations relating to equine rehabilitation, and their impact, are also covered in this unit. This unit is assessed through two course assignments.

The unit can be studied alone to achieve a BTEC Certificate of Achievement or as part of the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Horse Management.

CHM3  BTEC UNIT 3: PRINCIPLES OF ANIMAL NUTRITION

This unit covers the main components of the diet of the horse and examines the source, structure and function of the major nutrients, as well as their nutritional value and the detrimental effects of dietary imbalances. The unit identifies feed habits of the grass kept and stabled horse, the essential nutrients and principles of feeding & watering.  You will learn how to calculate and assess individual horse’s dietary requirements, compare and evaluate feeding systems and be able to transfer your knowledge and skills to a practical context when feeding horses.  This unit is assessed through two course assignments.

The unit can be studied alone to achieve a BTEC Certificate of Achievement or as part of the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Horse Management.
